Walking around the 3 peaks on a weekend break

Postby Rob Hunter » Wed Sep 22, 2010 8:18 pm

Hello,

Having competed in the last three races I'm not taking part this year :-(
However, I am coming over in October from Holland for a weekend break with my wife and we'll have 2 days to walk in the Peak District :-)

We're thinking of walking parts of the course. Probably from Cold Cotes, up Ingelborough and down to Gill Garth (so the course in reverse).
These parts of only open to bikes on race day but I remember that walkers seemed to be free to roam. Are there any parts that are closed also to walkers that I should avoid and are their alternative routes?

Can someone also suggest a nice B+B? Ideally in Horton.

Finally, best wishes to all taking part and the very best of luck. I shall be thinking of you all here from Holland on race day!

Many thanks. Now if someone can suggest a B+B, we'll be good to go!

I stongly suggest that you buy a walking map - The 1:25000 Ordnance Survey Explorer map of the Yorkshire Dales South and West (Code OL2).
The higher land is all open access, but you can only cross the lower slopes on rights of way which are all shown on the map and you'll probably want to keep to the paths on the summits anyway.

You can buy a map at http://www.dash4it.co.uk or the Ordnance Survey website.

Make sure you are properly equiped - with map, compass, whistle, torch, waterproofs, etc. if your going up on the summits. Remember there won't be marshals there when you go walking.

Have a good weekend! 8-)
