After a lengthy discussion with the Commissaires of this year's race it was decided that from 2011 STRAIGHT HANDLEBARS will no longer be permitted in the 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross, all machines will have drop bars.

Good on you John (and the commissioners). Plenty of reasons to keep this race in its roots. All of them are sound!

Great decision. Now, how about banning spare bikes? It gives people an unfair advantage. Spare wheels ok but bikes............? People use bikes with different gearing and wheels with harder tyres on. Let's make the playing field fair for all.

Harder tyres?? Mine are about 500 PSI in that race!!

Don't agree with banning spare bikes. It's a cyclocross - spare bikes are fully permitted in all cyclocross - there are plenty of tough endurance MTB races people can do if spare bikes isn't their thing.

This question is purely out of interest because it makes no difference to me, i ride on drops anyway, but, "why have straight bars been banned"?

Can I echo rammy's question? Just curious about the reasons - it was my first time this year and was planning to use straight bars next year to improve comfort towards the end, but in some respects I'm relieved they're no longer allowed, as it saves me lots of faffing with stripping parts of my MTB!

Excellent decision. There are always some thinly disguised mountain bikes in the race that just sneak in as within the rules. This will help ensure that it's a genuine cross race.
