How long is a piece of string?

Postby rammy » Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:54 am

I realise this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions but I'll ask it anyway.

How much difference in finish time could I expect the wet/muddy conditions to make?

I did my 1st event last year, finishing in 5hrs, the conditions I thought where very good, dry and from what I remember the weeks leading up to the event had been relatively dry.
This year I'm not expecting the conditions to be quite so favourable, we seem to have had lots of rain.
All other things being equal, ie. no mechanical issues,,,my fitness the same as last year, what might I expect my finish time to be this year?

I think conditions of the day make as much difference as anything. The underlying bogginess doesn't have so much effect unless it is really extreme, most of the paths are constructed and drained. It's the surface water on the day, wind and maybe visibility that affects speed most and that can change quite quickly. The forecast appears to be rain today and overnight then cool but dry with 10mph-ish (more on the tops) NE wind on Sunday(fast descent to Cold cotes and Horton but tough up to Chapel le Dale and Pen y Ghent lane.
Just my opinion.

I think that the hardest bit in wet/boggy conditions will be the bit across Simon Fell to Ingleborough which was as dry as bone last year and fast(ish) riding. The decent off Inglebourough will also be much boggier than last year and could mean a slower ride than last year. Most of the rest is stony tracks so shoulnt be so bad.
