Chainset gearing for the 3 peaks

Hello campers

I am planning on entering the 3 Peaks for the first time next year, I've purchased a lot of new shiny bits in readiness but need advice on what kind of chainset gearing to opt for?
Do I go for a compact (34-48) chainset and or a cyclo cross specific chainset (38-46)

It depends mainly on the idividual in question.

But I'd advise the compact setup, 34/48, the first two climbs are better suited to the runners however the final climb is mostly rideable if you are a good climber.

Any advantage to using a Mtb or long cage mech and lower gearing in the back? (11-32 or 11-36?) I'm told PYG can be ridden much of the way if you are fit and have a lower gear?

The last several years Ive used a triple,been a god send.

Bit late now, but for next year: for 3 peaks I equip my cross bike with a compact road triple on the front: 32/39/50 and a long cage MTB mech on the rear with an 11/34 block on the back. This gives you all the gears for fast road work as well as enough for riding up Pen-y-ghent...

I normally race the crosser with a 36T single ring on the front...
